According to the American Nurse 's Association (ANA), nursing is considered as the protection and development of health, reduction of physical and mental ailment, and being advocate of patients as well as family members. When it comes to the role of a nurse the standards of practice display competent behaviors based on the nursing process; collegiality, collaboration, education, principles, experience as well as management. Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) and Registered Nurses (RN) have a similar scope of practice yet RNs have more responsibility and need more education. This process can take close to a year to complete. As an RN you must have an associate or bachelor 's degree from a school that has been approved by the board of nursing. According to nursinglicensure.org (2013) "As an RN schooling can vary anywhere from 2 to 4 years, depending on the degree." The comparison between them is that both programs teach you the same material as far as subjects such as nutrition, medical surgical, pharmacology, leadership, fundamentals, and etc. The difference is as an LVN you understand the basic information of such nursing concepts and as an RN you must learn these subjects in depth and be able to apply them critically. According to Duncan and Dephew "A LVN has completed certain aspects of these expectations, but in becoming an RN, the role expectations are expanded" (Duncan & Depew, 2011, p.38). Another commonality shared between an LVN and an RN is the constant continuation of education to stay updated with all the new knowledge and skills in their scope of practice. An RN and an LVN both communicate within their interdisciplinary team, but the difference is that the RN coordinates for the communication and activities with patients, other health care providers, as well as family members. An LVN is not able to make decisions on their own without an RNs approval. During the collaborations in a clinical setting an LVN may give their input, but it is ultimately the RNs decision in regards to patient care. The similarity of collaboration between an LVN and an RN is they both do this within the interdisciplinary team as well as family members and patients.
