Collaboration In Nursing

According to the American Nurse 's Association (ANA), nursing is considered as the protection and development of health, reduction of physical and mental ailment, and being advocate of patients as well as family members. When it comes to the role of a nurse the standards of practice display competent behaviors based on the nursing process; collegiality, collaboration, education, principles, experience as well as management. Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) and Registered Nurses (RN) have a similar scope of practice yet RNs have more responsibility and need more education. The two standards that are of particular interest to me that I would apply in my clinical setting as an RN are education and collaboration. The coursework for an RN and …show more content…
This process can take close to a year to complete. As an RN you must have an associate or bachelor 's degree from a school that has been approved by the board of nursing. According to nursinglicensure.org (2013) "As an RN schooling can vary anywhere from 2 to 4 years, depending on the degree." The comparison between them is that both programs teach you the same material as far as subjects such as nutrition, medical surgical, pharmacology, leadership, fundamentals, and etc. The difference is as an LVN you understand the basic information of such nursing concepts and as an RN you must learn these subjects in depth and be able to apply them critically. According to Duncan and Dephew "A LVN has completed certain aspects of these expectations, but in becoming an RN, the role expectations are expanded" (Duncan & Depew, 2011, p.38). Another commonality shared between an LVN and an RN is the constant continuation of education to stay updated with all the new knowledge and skills in their scope of practice. LVNs and RNs must take part in ongoing changes in nursing in order to be able to provide safe …show more content…
An RN and an LVN both communicate within their interdisciplinary team, but the difference is that the RN coordinates for the communication and activities with patients, other health care providers, as well as family members. An LVN is not able to make decisions on their own without an RNs approval. During the collaborations in a clinical setting an LVN may give their input, but it is ultimately the RNs decision in regards to patient care. The similarity of collaboration between an LVN and an RN is they both do this within the interdisciplinary team as well as family members and patients. The difference between an LVN and an RN in a clinical setting is the RN has more responsibilities for patient care including coordination for these collaborations to occur. In a clinical practice, education and collaboration are two key elements for a competent nurse. Education is important because it allows you to be more competent. Collaboration is important because involvement with the whole team allows for an optimal outcome for your patient. Both of these elements have similarities and differences when used by an RN and an

The ANA outlines the measures, actions, and methods that comprehensively describe nearly every aspect of the practice of nursing (White & O’Sullivan, 2012, p. 11). In addition, due to the potential harm of a person that can result from untrained or incompetent nursing, all states have enacted rules and regulations that govern licensure of nurses. A nurse’s scope of practice is limited by their license as defined by law and includes specific educational requirements, clinical experience, and specific demonstrated competencies.…

The main providers of care in a Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit are the Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Pharmacists, and Therapists (Neurocritical, 2014). The Neurocritical Nurse Practitioner is the main collaborator between all providers and this concept comes naturally to Nurse Practitioners due to their strength of open communication. Evidence has proven that “the addition of a Nurse Practitioner to a medical team ensured better clinical coverage of the critically-ill patients” (Fry, 2011, pg 60). Nurse Practitioners are habitually more available for patient families to communicate with, which provide families a sense of relief to have easy access to a provider and knowing the Nurse Practitioner has the family needs in mind. In a study by Fry that discussed the impact of nurse practitioners in critical care services, Nurse Practitioners spent the majority of their time in care coordination, communicating with patients and collaborating with the team (Fry, 2011, pg 59).…

At clinical I experienced a situation which reminded me of an ethical concern in which poor communication existed among health care professionals. One of the other student nurses in my group told me that her nurses was not listening to what she was saying. The student nurse informed me she told the nurse that the patient’s pulse ox was 82 and the nurse did not address the concern. She said the nurse was looking at her, but started talking to the doctor who just walked in the room. A couple minutes later the nurse asked the student if she took the pulse ox.…

Complexity Science and Interprofessional Collaboration Complexity science I found the literature from the book, On the Edge: Nursing in the Age of Complexity by Claire Lindberg, Sue Nash, and Curt Lindberg on complex adaptive systems (CAS) to be very insightful in regards to the healthcare environment. Nurses hold a position to become leaders in healthcare, yet are not prepared to successfully navigate the complex hospital environment. Instead we are taught that carrying out an intervention should have an expected outcome or that A will lead to B. The harsh reality is that the more complex the scenario becomes the harder it is for even an experienced healthcare provider to foresee an outcome. Though this unpredictable environment…

According the American Association of Nurse Practitioners ([AANP], n.d.), Georgia is a state with restricted practice which means that the state requires supervision or management by an outside health discipline, such as a physician, in order for APRNs to provide care. Full practice authority is when state and licensure law allows for the APRN to assess, diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic testing, initiate and manage treatments (which includes prescriptive authority) under the licensure authority of the state board of nursing. Full practice authority is the model recommended by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, n.d.). Evidence suggest that the first year of nursing practice is challenging for many new graduate nurses, particularly as they strive to build confidence in their professional practice (Pfaff, Baxter, Jack, & Ploeg, 2014). It is suggested that most academic programs provide limited opportunities for nursing students to develop a sense of confidence in inter professional collaboration (Olson, 2009; Pfaff et al., 2014). However, my previous and current professional experience has given me the ability to relate to my team in a manner that promotes the delivery of positive outcomes to my patients. I have enhanced this quality particularly during my clinical placements at ward 6 West in Calvary Private Hospital where it was necessary to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to achieve set goals and to satisfy the unique and complex needs of patients. My outstanding collaboration, interpersonal and communication skills will also assist to develop and maintain strong relationships with members of my team.…

The purpose of the concept analysis developed by Leslie and Lonneman was to review literature of other scholars to determine if the development of trusting relationships between the patient and RN in the home health care setting resulted in better patient outcomes. The article, “Promoting Trust in the Registered Nurse–Patient Relationship”, was developed through the implementation of Rodgers evolutionary method of concept analysis, which she developed in 1989 (p.59). The evolutionary method includes six steps: (a) Identification of the concept; (b) Identification of a setting and sample; (c) Identification of the attributes and contextual basis of the concept through the collection of data; (d) Analyzing the data; (e) Identification of an…
