Nursing As Caring Research Paper

The basic foundation of nursing is the act of caring. A nurse has the responsibility to provide the best unbiased care to patients of all ages and races. Through caring, a nurse provides the necessary care to regain one’s health and wellness. A nurse should not let his / her personal beliefs influence caring actions. Through effective listening, a nurse will be able to prioritize what should be valued most for each patient and be able to understand that every person has different beliefs and values. It is a major key to providing effective care. Nursing is not the right profession for people who hold racist beliefs, because a nurse must accept and respect people for who they are. The primary role of nurses is to help patients regain their health. Health is the physical, emotional, and social well-being of a person. The environment of care has a big influence in patient recovery. The caring environment will vary for every patient based on patient condition and knowing how to approach each patient is a skill necessary in becoming a caring nurse. The theory which I will incorporate into my practice is the theory of “Nursing as Caring”. Boykin and Schoenhofer (2001), the founders of Nursing as Caring theory, states that every person is caring and continues to grow in caring their whole life. The main idea of the theory is that everyone is inherently caring and that caring is an important part of human life. As a nurse, I must understand that every person, including myself, is a caring person. I may have to provide care for a criminal, but I must be able to see that person as a caring individual. By applying the theory to the nursing situations in my everyday practice and I will be able to perceive every person I meet during the day as a caring
