Nursing Jurisprudence is the department of law that collects all the different legal rules and the principles that affect the practice of nursing and includes: “the study, but also the interpretation of all these rules and principles and their application in the regulation of the practice of nursing” (Nursing Crib). The laws, which are also known as the nursing practice acts, are set up by each states board of nursing. The state board of nursing license nurses based on these NPAs, and holds hearings for those accused of misconduct. This means that each nurse is to know and understand the Nursing Jurisprudence, which includes the NPAs, and is required to follow them or risk losing their license. The BON makes sure that all nurses renew their license every other year with confirmation of the required continuing education. According to the BON website they license qualified RNs to begin practice as advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), which include: clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetist, nurse practitioners, and midwives. If examination is passed and BON issues a license I will follow the NPA and be held accountable by the BON. According to the Nurse Practice Act I am required to always wear a name bag with my degree, license, name, picture, and employer at all times when on duty. I have the responsibility to refuse a task given to me if it violates NPA or the Rules and Regulations and am protected by the NPA from being fired, suspended, or discriminated because of refusal. When refusing a task I am to inform that it could “constitute grounds for reporting the nurse to the Board” (Sec. 301. 352. Subsection a-1). I will be responsible for reporting to the Board if I have cause to believe that another nurse has violated the NPA or Rules and Regulations, or a nursing student that shows reason to believe that they are impaired by chemical dependency. If this happens I have the responsibility to make a report, which can be done in three different ways: to the Board, a peer review committee, or a nursing educational program.
