The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the concept of comfort using content delineated by Chinn and Kramer (2015, pp. 158-178). In doing so, I will provide a context for the concept of comfort, including how my nursing worldview shapes my view of comfort; examine how technology has impacted comfort, and explain the need to understand the concept of comfort in greater detail as it relates to nursing. Further, I will examine the use of terms related to comfort and how various sources of evidence define the concept of comfort. Continuing, I will provide an exemplar, contrary, related and borderline case, finishing with an examination of the characteristics that represent comfort.

Comfort can be a noun, as in a state of being, a good feeling or ease. Words that are synonymous with this definition are: pleasure, satisfaction, and relaxation, and words that would be related to this definition are alleviation, consolation, compassion, relief, and encouragement. The advertisement states the focus of the attendants is to assure his comfort (Sharp, 2010). This ad is particularly offensive, in that East Asian women were forced into prostitution by the Japanese military, and were referred to as comfort women and sent to comfort stations, this is also an example of the sexualization of comfort ("Comfort women," n.d.). The other aspect of this example is the cultural lens through which we see our world. This ad may mean something different for East Asian women, than it would for American consumers, that might not know about East Asian women being forced into prostitution, and referred to as comfort
