Personal Narrative: A Career As A Family Nurse

The career I was assigned for this presentation is a Family Nurse Practitioner. In the spirit of full disclosure, until this paper I was not fully aware of what this profession truly does for the community. Family nurse practitioners, abbreviated as FNPs, are advanced practice registered nurses who work autonomously or in collaboration with other healthcare professionals to deliver family-focused care (graduatenursing). Although I personally have always found the field of nursing vastly interesting and I do plan on working with children, I am not currently pursuing this career. Family nurse practitioners are compensated higher than a pediatric nurses due to the higher amount versatility required for their jobs. In addition, there is a wider variety of places a FNP can work outside of a hospital. FNP’s can work not only in a hospital like pediatric nurses, but they can additionally work in clinics, private homes, schools, doctor’s offices, and in the private sector (graduatenursing). The FNPs are also qualified to work in these places as administrators and policy makers. Since FNP is a specialty in the occupation of nurse practitioners (NPs), the history of FNPs essentially begins with the origin of nurse practitioners. In the early 1960’s, Dr. Loretta C. Ford discovered that because of a shortage of primary care physicians in the community, health care for children and families was severely lacking (womenofthehall). She then partnered with pediatrician Dr. Henry Silver to create a nursing role that would prepare nurses to “provide comprehensive well-child care and to manage common childhood health problems” (Historical). Without these skills and interests, it may be hard for a potential FNP to enjoy or keep their jobs. Some of these skills are obviously academic, but others reach more into the person’s character and personality. These skills include but are not limited to: compassion, leadership skills, confidence, interpersonal skills, decisive, problem solving skills, adaptability, stamina, ethics, detail oriented, and a base knowledge of math and science (Mayo). These skills are very important to help not only the FNP succeed, but also to give patient centered care to each patient that the FNP comes in contact with. Leadership skills, decisiveness, problem solving, detail oriented, and adaptability are all crucial for the ever-changing job that is nurse practicioning. Due to the vast variety of each patient and his or her needs, very few cases are alike and change is a crucial part of the medical system. Things can also go wrong with a patient or their treatment plan, which means that all of these traits are important for the FNP to give the best care possible to the situation. Compassion, confidence, interpersonal skills, and ethics all relate closer to the personality and character of the FNP. FNPs deal mostly with intimate personal care that patients do not receive
