In the movie Wit, directed by Mike Nichols, we were able to see what is nursing and what is not. A perfect example would be the Doctor. He was not there for Vivian most of the time. Susie demonstrated this power when she tried to reduce the number of drugs prescribed by the doctor. The relationship between Susie and Vivian also surprised me, since at the beginning it did not seem like Susie was going to turn out to be the way she is.
On the other hand, there are some similarities and differences between the role I saw in the firm and my readings on the roles of the nurse. One of the main roles is being a caregiver. Patients need to be provided with comfort. All of their questions should be answered and no doubt should be left behind. Nurses need to support their patient in every possible way. As mentioned earlier, Susie showed support towards Vivian, by respecting her decisions.
Last but not least, nurses are the doctor’s right hand, even though it does not always work that way. There are times where the nurses need to explain to the doctor what he or she thinks is best for the patient.
