Nurses for Newborns is a community based program that was started in the early 1990’s by Sharon Rohrbach, RN, and Robin Kinney and currently serves 20 counties in Missouri and 6 counties in central Tennessee. Sharon was a nurse in the critical care nursery of a local hospital. Frequently the babies in her community were admitted as patients as soon as just a few days after going home after birth. Sharon attributed the hospital visits to the parents’ lack of knowledge about infant care in the first year of life and thought in home visits providing personalized parenting education would be the community’s missing link to increase support for these families.
