Midwife Advantages And Disadvantages

Midwives are categorized as professionals who help women give birth and maintain good health before and after pregnancy. Midwives can work in different locations, some which include maternity units of large hospitals, private maternity hospitals, group practices, birth centers, and even at the comfort of the patient’s home. There are several advantages of having midwives available across Saskatchewan, but the biggest issue regarding midwifery is how they are not available across all of Saskatchewan and there is no training and or funding available, which may be in result of some factors. Midwives provide many more birth options than traditional doctors do, they are able to perform the birth in the comfort of your own home, in a hospital setting, in care centers, or a midwife-led unit. With having these options available, mothers may not be undergoing as much stress. Another great factor when considering a midwife is the constant one-on-one care they provide their patients with. As research proves, “Midwives typically spend more one-on-one time interacting with their patients than a physician can during appointments and prenatal visits, and can provide more hands-on support during labor, birth and postpartum,” (livescience.com). It is very important to offer as much care for patients as midwives do, because it is very beneficial in the overall health of the mother as well as their baby. There are many steps that midwives take in when providing the ultimate care to their patients. As the Saskatchewan Association of Midwives states, “Midwives offer community-based care throughout pregnancy, labor and birth and for six weeks following birth. This includes well-women gynecological and maternity care; pre- and post-natal education and counseling; parenting and breastfeeding education and care of the newborn,” (saskatchewanmidwives.com). Midwives are said to be very caring for their patient and tend to know and understand their patient on a more personal level. Midwives develop relationships with their patients and provide extra support that may not be received with a doctor. As parents’ magazine portrays, “Many women are finding that a midwife can offer a more intimate and nurturing birth experience,” (Marshall, 1). All these factors regarding midwifery in Saskatchewan have substantially influenced my overall thoughts on the
