Description of Setting
Kirkhillgait Nursery is open from 8.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday and has 78 children on roll, 5 whom are full time and 73 whom are part time. There are no children with additional support needs currently, but in the past when there was the nursery had external support. There are 11 members of staff (all part-time?). The aims of the nursery are as follows:
• To provide a safe and secure environment for young babies and children to grow and develop and reach their full potential.
• To provide all the care and attention young children require, promoting the key elements of child development and learning.
• To provide parent/carer with the peace of mind that their children are safe, happy and well cared for.

Each of these rooms has a variety of toys and resources for children to develop, for example in the baby room there is a large selection of books for children to develop their linguistic skills, as well as ride on toys and walking supports for children to develop physical skills. There is multiple storage rooms within the nursery for toys that may not fit in the playrooms, and can be easily accessed by staff at any time and they are in places that practitioners can take the children to choose which toys the want from them. As well as 4 playrooms, one for each age, there is an outdoor area close to the nursery and a large playing field behind the nursery that can be used. For Health and Wellbeing there is children’s own highchairs, receiving privacy when being changed in a separate room, the practitioners assisting when brushing teeth and getting to try a variety of food during snack and lunch. For Emotional and Spiritual Wellbeing children have access to sensory play through treasure boxes that are safe for them to touch, see, smell, hear and taste, access to art materials that they can use with practitioner supervision such as play dough, paint and crayons. Social Competence is developed through teamwork and sharing games and songs that babies can dance along with in a group such as Ring-a-Ring-a-Roses and is also developed through roleplay with items such as Duplo bricks and TV remotes used as phones. Through dancing to songs played through the day, walking, crawling and gross and fine motor skill toys Physical Competence is developed. Communication, Language and Representation is shown through babies expressing their views through body language and babbling and also through learning to talk. Finally Cognitive Competence is shown through listening and looking at stories, nursery rhymes and slightly through hand-eye
