Rhyme awareness was used in a 1st grade phonological awareness lesson I observed. This activity is at the linguistic level of manipulation which is introduced in 1st grade (Cooter and Reutzel, 2015 p. 110). Students worked in pairs on the carpet and were given cards with a picture on each card. The students had to match the cards that rhymed until every card was matched up. Introduction Due to my own affinity for English and the fact that I can see myself using it with my kindergarten O&P class, I chose the rhyming lesson plan. I think this lesson plan would be appropriate for kindergarteners towards the middle/end of the academic year. At this age, many will not be totally literate, but should be able to detect basic rhymes. Additionally, kindergarteners should be able to identify the words sounds associated with different letters, allowing them to spell phonetically. I think this lesson would be most effective if done earlier in the day because then class could review the song at the end of the day before students leave.…
