Even though both require a high school diploma, surgeons have many more years of education than nurse practitioners. The minimum requirements to be a nurse practitioner is to pass nursing school with a master’s degree, which takes about 4-6 years to achieve when considering the bachelor’s degree . The cost per year of nursing school varies from $40,000 to over $100,000 (“How Much Does It Cost”). For surgeons, a bachelor’s degree is required as well as the completion of medical school and residency training. This can take from 11 years to 18 years to accomplish (“Requirements”). This can put an aspiring doctor over $166,750 in debt (Kristof). To become a doctor, it would take twice as long or longer in college, and it would cost almost twice as much, which would take a lot of commitment.
