This mixed descriptive case study was done to describe the structures, processes, and perception of the outcomes of bedside handover in nursing. This study included observation of 532 handovers and 34 nurse interviews. Two separate hospitals were used in this study. Hospitals should reconsider their policy on using twelve-hour shifts over eight-hour shifts. The main reasons hospital facilities introduced twelve-hour shifts was to reduce hand offs, decrease the amount of money they were spending and they thought if they offered the shifts they would have more employee retention. The only statistics they should care about is real and unacceptable risks to patient safety and satisfaction as well as their employees’ health. Within the local hospital, continual complaints of non-comprehensive and inadequate end-of-shift reports stands out as a chief concern. With the concern of inadequate handovers, the concern of poor communication among nurses in the medical-surgical department and a lack of teamwork also are noted. Unsurprisingly, patient outcomes have been shown to be negatively influenced by nursing shifts longer than 10 hours (Trinkoff et al., 2011). Naps and breaks have been shown to increase mental alertness, however, nurses at AGH often go without breaks and rest (Barnsteiner, 2015b).
