As a medical surgical nurse my experiences related to healthcare have been as a patient advocate. As health care professionals we are the voice for our patients’. It seems like every day we advocate for our patients. It could be regarding health concerns, safety, pain management, even verbalizing to the medical doctor not a safe discharge, and prior patient being discharged home checking with their pharmacy if medications will be covered by their insurance. Recently took care of a patient that was admitted to hospital with hyperglycemia, unable to afford medications due to insurance not covering. The patient has been in the hospital for a week now. The main issue sometimes is do we have enough staff to take care of the sick patients’. With flu season, there have been nurses that would stay over to help out. On Monday 02/05/2018, received e-mail from unit managers new policy regarding patients that are on telemetry. It was a read and sign paper. Befor this policy came out when we had a patient on telemetry if they were going to MRI telemetery would be taken off and notified to monitor tech. But now hospital policy is if patient is going for CT or MRI, a nurse has to accompany that patient or calls the medical doctor to get order take off telemetry while patient is having these procedures. Than the question arises if that care nurse goes with her or his patients’ who is going to be watching other three patients? That is a concern, if I am leaving floor I want my other patients’ to be taken care of. If we are a telemetry nurse than we get four patients’ and if a non-telemetry nurse than five patients. There are many different types of patients we take care of, such as drug abuse, non complaints, the ones that are poverty level, and also who do not have any kind of medical insurances.
