Nurse Practitioner Experience

1. The plan to become a nurse practitioner in my future. Nurse practitioners or NPs are advanced practice registered nurses who provide care to patients throughout the lifespan, from infants to the elderly. NPs provide primary and some acute care and are qualified to meet the majority of patients' health care needs. Just like a physician, a nurse practitioner can prescribe medications, perform minor surgeries and procedures, physical exams, diagnostic tests, and many others responsibilities. I would love to work at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee or The Green House Homes in Tupelo, Mississippi. Both of these facilities are well known for high quality care and have an excellent staff on duty at all times. Being a nurse practitioner at the Green House Homes would give me the opportunity to provide one-on-one care to patients in their homes. Today, nurse practitioners are important to any community because of their effectiveness in providing high quality, lower cost health care services.

Although I may not specialize in this, I would like to practice geriatric nursing. I became interested in elder care when I ran across an article on Facebook. It explained that most elders in nursing homes or long-term care homes are often mistreated in some form and in some cases, abused. I then began reading related topics and learned about The Eden Alternatives. These are principles and practices that support the needs of different living environments, ranging from the nursing home to the a neighborhood. This led me to read into the Green House Project, which applies the Eden Alternatives to their patient care. These homes provide the elderly with a private, comfortable environment so they can live with dignity and companionship. I believe I would be an excellent candidate for this career because I possess many qualities essential for a great nurse; such as, communication skills, critical thinking, problem solving skills, and
