When dealing with disparities, NPs who work with the underserved know how hard it is to pick what is best for the patient and what the patient can afford to do for his or her health. For example, a patient with diabetes might need to decrease starches and eat healthier, but can barely afford to buy food. Currently working as clinic nurse in a Federally qualified health center, I see the struggle some of NPs have on wanting to do further testing for their patients, but the lack of resources for them. NPs want more time to talk and treat their patients. However, we have to accept that even though healthcare is based on helping others, it is also a business. I am aware that as an NP I would have a certain amount of patients to see in a day’s work. I know I might not have time to discuss every need or concern. However, a way to overcome this is by spending the couple minutes we have together by giving my undivided attention and addressing the concerns who are most important for them at that point without disregarding chronic illness that might also need attention.
