Patients on the unit requiring surgery must always have consents. On my unit I’ve encountered the scope of practice issue when obtaining consents from patients going to surgery. To date it’s unclear whether the nurse is responsible to obtain consent for anesthesia and or the physician. Some physicians get their own when explain the procedure to patient and their families and some put in orders for the nurse to obtain consent. Nurses should become cognizant of their roles and proper delegation to the roles of an LVN or aides.
