As mentioned previously, I met two very special nurses who took care of my grandmother during her time of need. When spending time with those nurses as they provided care to my grandmother, I was instantly attracted to their caring sense of nature. They were such gentle people who were extremely compassionate about what they were doing. That pure compassionate tied with their complex knowledge and understanding of health sciences made me want to become a nurse myself. Prior to nursing school I had no experience in caring for people.…

Introduction Hi, I’m Myrna Montoya, and I have been a nurse for more than 22 years. Nursing is my third profession. I was a schoolteacher and a consultant in training and development in my past life. When I got my diploma in nursing from Holy Name Hospital School of Nursing in Teaneck, NJ, I gave myself five years to link the three “me’s” into one “me”. On the fourth year of working as a staff nurse, I was offered a nurse educator position in the Education and Practice department in the Medical Center where I worked.…

The inspiration that I have received from my grandmother and mother has driven me immensely, but it was through my work experience that furthered my aspiration to become a Clinical Nurse Leader. My time spent working and volunteering at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, has taught me the importance of selflessness. Everyday I did my job to the very best of my capabilities, which meant coming in early and staying late. I expressed compassion and empathy to anyone that walked-in or called-in to the clinic. I found great joy in knowing that I was part of a team that aided in the well being others.…

My road to becoming a nurse was both difficult and comedic; it was two years of school while still working, hours upon hours of going over material that you did your best to understand in class and cram before the exam-over and over again. Then there is the boring, long, hot, clinicals two to three days a week in those atrocious solid white scrubs that made you look and feel like you are a huge marshmallow, we called ourselves “Team Michelin”. We spent more time with each other than we did our own families. And a social life? Non-existent.…

Since my birth, I have always been surrounded by people working or studying in the health care field. I sincerely believe that I have chosen the best career for my future because being a Nursing Officer is not really dangerous, it gives the chance to live exciting and challenging adventures and it provides enriched career advancement opportunities. At first, when I announced my career choice to my family and friends, they were not unanimous.…

I now understand that medical needs are not just cured with medicine alone; but with care, nurture and support received during the recovery period. For example, if you treat someone as if they are sick and not reinsure him or her that they can possibly get better; that person will continue to feel sick and have no ambition in recovery. I understand through my own personal experience that nurses/caregivers/doctors can pave the way for a person to find a balance and harmony within the mind, body and soul; which would promote a greater amount of health in a person and a sense of serenity. I believe through my life changing experiences I can make a difference in the lives of those in need and also helping those recover from their…
