Nurse Olivia Witte Case Study Nursing

Nurse Olivia Witte is the charge nurse at Sunrise Hospital. She oversees the interdisciplinary team that involves physicians, nurses, home care, and dieticians. Her goal is to transition ventilator dependent patients from the hospital to home. Nurse Witte is facing several barriers to this transition (Huber, 2014). The purpose of this paper is to discuss Nurse Witte’s dilemma, and review communication skills as well as leadership and management strategies. This scenario is fictional and can be found in our book on page 126 (Huber, 2014).
Current Problem Nurse Witte is responsible for caring for ventilator dependent patients at Sunrise Hospital. Her nursing staff has identified that a clinical pathway needs to be developed to help transition these patients home. Nurse Witte presents the idea to the physicians who do not support her. She also struggles with what types of diets are needed for discharge and cannot get in touch with the home health care

This is something that nurse Witte must communicate its importance to the team. Communication can occur in many different ways. I feel that verbal communication, persuasion, negotiation, and bargaining will benefit nurse Witte the most (Huber, 2014). To structure a clear message, the nurse must remember the seven C’s. She must be clear, concise, concrete, correct, coherent, complete, and courteous (Mindtools, n.d.). In an effort to create the clinical pathway, nurse Witte must use the proper nursing chain of command. She must first inform her nurse manager of her intent to create the pathway. Once the pathway is created, it will be reviewed by the director of nursing then the chief nursing officer. It will then be passed on to the CEO of the organization (Clavreul, 2017).
