The nurse navigator model of care was developed by Harold Freeman in 1990 as a means to alleviate barriers and provide disadvantaged female patients timely access to cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment and supportive care. The first navigation program was designed to help reduce disparities in breast cancer care among African American and Latino community of Harlem New York. Since then, the navigator model of care has extended to include preventative as well as palliative and end of life care for cancer patients.
