Abstract
The nursing shortage worldwide is a cause for concern because as the population becomes more ill and more dependent on medical treatment, we are relying on the cornerstone of healthcare: nurses; to sustain this demand. Numerous factors go into the dissatisfaction of nursing; from nursing burnout, understaffing and cumulative healthcare needs- just to mention a few. Bette Mariana decided to research nursing satisfaction within a population of nurses that were 55 and younger, on the importance of mentorship in nursing and how it contributes to career satisfaction in the workplace. With multiple research methods utilized; comparative and correlational such as the ANOVA and the MNCSS; nurses were questioned regarding many topics from: age, gender, area of practice, their career satisfaction, intent to stay in the nursing field and whether they were involved in mentor relationships. The independent variable was whether nurses participated in the mentoring relationship; while the independent variable was the career satisfaction and the intent to stay in the nursing profession (Mariana, 2012). Bette Mariana created the predominant instrument used for the data collection, called the Mariana Nursing Career Satisfaction Scale (MNCSS).
