Pam obtains continuing education credits through online classes, attending nursing conferences, and webinars. Pam reads professional journals that include Journal of Professional Nursing and Nurse Leader, which is the official journal of the AONE.
Nurse Leader Pam Bourassa mentioned that her leadership style is that of a servant leader. According to Spears (as cited in Trastek, Hamilton, & Niles, 2014) servant leadership characteristics and qualities are “listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and building community” (p. 379). Since nurses value the philosophy of caring and the promotion of healing, they tend to prefer a servant leadership. Pam encourages her staff to be empathetic, to be a leader in all that you do, and to put the needs of others before themselves. Pam Bourassa is an effective leader by motivating her staff. Pam sends weekly emails to all the staff to let them know how important we all are to the team and also lets us all know how much she appreciates all our hard work. She also brings candy and other treats for us to eat and leaves a note nearby thanking us for our dedication to the team. Pam also shows her leadership skills by promoting learning opportunities for the staff. Pam encourages the nurses to get certified and sends us quarterly updates on education
