Skilled Nursing Leadership Case Study

I had the pleasure of interviewing Sara Peterson, a nurse manager who works at a skilled nursing facility. She has worked there for almost three years and has learned quite a bit about leadership during this time. The nurse manager at this facility is called the “Heritage Team Lead”. The tern heritage comes from the hall/section that this nurse manager is over. In this skilled nursing facility there are four nurse managers that work together and report to a main director in nursing (DRN). A nurse manager helps the patients by managing the nurses and certified nursing assistants in their unit. They occasionally work with the patient’s care physicians if needed. Mrs. Peterson stated that she “loves helping people, wanted to make a career out …show more content…
Peterson was hired she went through a training course to ensure she would be able to help the staff as much as possible. In this course they reviewed the term leadership and what makes a person a good leader. According to the textbook: Health Communication, Theory & Practice, “A leader is a person who uses his or her power to move or influence a group toward perceived goals through verbal and nonverbal communication. Effective leaders must be able to inspire visions and goals.” (74) This definition is very close to what Mrs. Peterson was taught. The main goals of this skilled nursing facility are to make sure the residents are being physically and emotionally taken care …show more content…
Peterson now tries to think about what she is going to say before explaining what needs to be done for the day. All the nurses, aides, and herself now have a meeting at the beginning of each shift and talk about the goals for the day. Sara shares the tasks that need to be filled, and each person signs up for what they feel comfortable doing that day. This has helped boost morale with the aides, and nurses, because they get to choose their work instead of just having chores assigned to them.
To help boost morale even more, Sara started a reward system that is now implemented throughout the nursing facility. If you are seen doing something good by a nurse manager, director of nursing, or even the residents of the hall, you are given a piece of paper with a point value printed on it. You can save these points up and buy candy, etc. or the aides/nurses and other staff can pool their points together to earn a pizza day. Even though this is a new project it has been very popular and has started a friendly competition between the staff at this skilled nursing

One such change would be to recognize and reward staff for the work they do. Helping them see the impact they have on a resident’s quality of life will increase meaningful purpose (Manion, 2011). Another initiative is to identify the nurses that want to engage in professional development and provide them with the flexibility and resources necessary to increase competency in a chosen area (Atefi, Abdullah, Wong & Mazlom, 2014). Both of these changes will also have a positive impact in ensuring healthy relationships are maintained by all staff.…

The activity was part of the NOD Continuity Binder –an effort by Ms. Smith and myself to improve the efficiency of the nursing supervisors at the facility. During todays practicum I grasped the importance of remaining flexible. Hospital administrators and even governing agencies can change regulations or expectations suddenly. As nurse managers we must be willing to adapt to change and to do so swiftly so that our units stay up to date with mandates. Ms. Smith’s flexibility and willingness to adapt were exemplary of the kind of nurse administrator I wish to become.…

While I think it is effective to work as a team and through partners. I think it is smarter to stagger all of the lunches due to the lack of people on the floor when half of the nurses decide to go on lunch at the same time. I think there needed to be more conversation via all the nurses and not just the partners. I think if the partner is extremely swamped they need to be vocal in telling their partner they probably should not leave yet because they would be unable to cover all of the patients. My unit did not have a list of what patient room numbers went with each nurse which left a lot of nurses’ scrabbling to figure out who they needed to find or call to help with various call lights.…

Since the beginning of her career, The First Lady Michelle Obama has show impeccable respect to herself as a woman, wife, mother and leader, but also has demonstrate respect to others, despite their political differences (Forbes, 2012). An analysis was performed to determine why the nursing staff on 9A and 9B were dissatisfied with their jobs and consequently leaving the organization all together, thus seeking employment at competing hospitals within the area. Although the organization has been successful in recruiting nurses the key is retaining them. A recent exodus of nurses took place, which placed management in desperation to find replacements quickly; therefore, led to the hiring of new graduates and contract nurses to fill the void. 9A and 9B contains 60 beds, which includes mostly high acuity patients and the typical nurse to patient ratio was 1:5, but recently has been 1:6 and there has been times the ratio has been as high as 1:7, especially on the weekends. To add to the frustrations of the nursing staff, management was never seen and his door was always closed and rarely available for support.…

Leadership and management are an integral part of every nurse’s job, from staff nurse through to those in official executive roles. Management responsibilities such as organising, planning, delivering and evaluating care are activities that a nurse will enagage with every single day while at work. With an ever-limited and aging workforce, a decrease in available resources, a more acutely ill patient population and a profound period of change within the National Health Service (NHS) today’s health care workers are exposed to high stress levels to meet the demands required of them, which is resulting in effective nursing leadership and management being a challenging and difficult task.…

Research done about Certified Nurse Assistants (CNA) has shown that improvingthe quality and effectiveness of a nursing home begins with improving the satisfaction ofworkers. When CNAs are committed and happy with their job, it is easier for them toplease the residents. Research found that in order to improve the satisfaction of CNAsthere needs to be an increase of teamwork, wages, benefits, job advancementopportunities, and involvement of frontline workers. I agree with this statement. I believethat it is hard to have happy residents without happy workers.…

The nurse manager of the floor, Diane Martin has lost sight, or lacks the skills of a transitional leader, this is a key component in creating a just culture. In order to be a transitional leader it is necessary to work with those you manage and display a strong sense of support and advocacy on behalf of their staff and patients (American Nursing Association, 2010). Diane Martin seems to not have this attribute. Nurse Kinsey, despite her preliminary concerns, challenges her for no longer being seen on the floor and invites her to follow her for a day to see how she has to solve one problem after the next. When confronted, Diane simply states how she would like to, but she has no time, and she is busy writing thank you cards, studying metrics…

Porter-O’Grady and Malloch (2015) note that a leader cannot expect anyone else to know what drives them if they do not know what drives themselves. What drives J.C. is her personal nursing philosophy that she must be visible and supportive of her staff in order to be a successful manager, leader, and mentor. She strives to never look at herself as above anyone else, she states, “I am one of them, and it takes all of us to give excellent patient care that we all as caregivers want to give”. One of the ways J.C. attains this goal is by always following through on any requests or questions that come her way. She believes that this is how she has built the trust of her staff.…

During my leadership observation, I shadowed the nurse leader on the fourth floor of Parkview Regional Medical Center. She was the leader for the ortho-neuro trauma unit, which cares for patients with neurological and or musculoskeletal issues and those who have had surgical procedures that affect the nerves or bones of the body. The unit takes both acute and stable patients. When asked what the staff to patient and patient care tech to patient ratios were, the nurse leader replied that the staff to patient ratio was normally four to five patients per nurse and nine to twelve patients per care tech. The types of staff members found on the floor were registered nurses and patient care techs, with students performing clinicals on the floor as…

She boldly carried out her mission and became someone the staff admired for her dedication and hard work to improve the hospital unit’s environment and in the end provide outstanding patient care with improved patient outcomes. In order for Gina to make a change, she had to become a leader, and work through the system to incorporate the other departments. It was necessary to do this to get supplies and equipment ordered, hire and schedule according to the hospital needs, and get the inappropriate behavior of the nurse supervisors addressed. This is a clear example where a nurse acted as a leader and change agent through the systems…
