Frequently a clinical nurse who has great clinical skills is promoted to a manager level with very little management experience. According to the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) Guiding Principles (2017), nurse leader succession preparation is critical to ensuring constant, healthy work environments for nurses. After managers or directors leave a position, charge nurses or those nurses with the most seniority are looked to fill the vacancy. Titzer, and Shirey (2013) commented that a nursing leadership emergency exists in health care and permits succession planning efforts. These communication skills include speech, written, and nonverbal skills. This is especially important during the first year when trying to learn about the about the employees and the department. The employees are always watching the manager and will be looking to you as a role model. So, it is important to always do your best to represent the department, for example, being on time to meetings, making deadlines, and keeping personal opinions to yourself. When speaking to other managers, managing up always shows acknowledgement well the job your employees are performing. Knowledge management plays a very important part in ensuring high quality to the nursing unit or department. This is how the manager can be creative in how employees and the department creates, shares, uses and manages the knowledge and information in the hospital. There are four parts to knowledge management: good leadership, technical leadership, people to facilitate the knowledge management process, and a system that rewards the sharing of the knowledge.
