I’ve made the decision to be a Hospital Corpsman in the United States Navy. A Hospital Corpsman performs duties as assistants to prevent and treat diseases and injuries and accommodate health care professionals in aiding Navy and Marine Corps workforce. Being a HM in the Navy brings you many job opportunities when you resign such as being a dental assistant, EMT, and a dental hygienist. Some characteristics I carry that would make me a great HM are my ability to act and think quickly and my passion for caregiving. I have many reasons why I want to join the Navy. I want to do my part in making sure that my family and friends live in a safe and terror free world. Also I want to live the life I had always read about in books. The Navy's motto is “not for self, but for country” and their symbol is an anchor because they’re on sea most of the time. Basic training for the navy is in Great Lakes, Illinois and is only 8 weeks long. In week one you will swim, condition, march, drill, and attend navy classes. Weeks two is a confidence building week where you go through the confidence course, a course designed to stimulate shipboard situations you encounter in an emergency. Week three is a land-bound training ship where you learn everything from ship names, to first aid techniques, and to signaling with flags. Week four is where you'll have the opportunity to fire a weapon. When you've proven you can properly shoot a gun, you will be moved to the live-fire range. Week five is based on careers and where you want to go, what you want to do, and how fast you intend to get there. Week six is fire safety. You learn ship safety techniques such as how to extinguish fires, escape smoke-filled compartments, open and close watertight doors, operate Oxygen Breathing Apparatus, and carry fire hoses. Week seven is where you have to do the 12 different scenarios incorporating everything you have learned in the previous weeks. Week eight is graduation where you are no longer a recruit and can finally see your friends and family. The maximum allowable body fat limits are 23% for men and 34% for women. Navy reservists are
