People will always judge or be judged. However, there are times when people vocalize their opinion and look to degrade the other person. This is the core concept of bullying. Unforgettably, our society has people that are considered bullies. This negative action destroys a person’s self-image, induces stress and causes tension between members of a social group. It is important to realize that bullying happens in a variety of settings and throughout several careers settings.

I personally was bullied by a nurse. She felt that new graduate nurses did not belong in the Intensive Care Unit. I continued on my course and did not allow they nurse to fluster me. While this approach is not as effective, I felt it better than direct confrontation. Eventually, that nurse was asked to leave on the grounds of professionalism. Nurse hierarchy and ability to criticize new nurses work are factors that affect horizontal nurse bullying (Granstra, 2015). Regrettably, these types of behaviors negatively affect the new nurse or the nurse being bullied. Nurse retention, job performance, and patient care are all decrease due to horizontal nurse bullying (Granstra, 2015). I believe the source of bullying for nursing stems from the lack of support and respect nurses receive from doctors, other nurses management, patients and family members. Nurse are a vital part component to a patients’ care however, our autonomy is limited and our time is limited. The majority of nurses tend to work hours without breaks, have negative interactions with doctors, feel overwhelmed by charting, miss time with their family and several other factors that it is not surprising they lash out towards other …show more content…
The feeling of not being part of a group can cause anxiety, depression and diminish self-confidence. I believe Sue was afraid she may be ostracized, judged or bullied if she did have a pair of jeans.
