Long ago, nurses are known to wear white uniforms and stiff caps. Patients stays in the hospital for so many days to recover from surgery. Nurses only received a basic nursing education, and task based oriented. Today nursing has changed from wearing white uniform and cap to scrubs and non-cap wearing. They get good education at colleges and some universities, focusing on coordination of care, critical thinking, and clinical skills. As a result of healthcare reform, health care system focus is shifting toward high quality care, improve patient outcome, and medical cost reduction. She is aware of health reform and what it demands of nurses. She is a member of American Nurses Association, and always read their articles and news letters about the transformation of healthcare in the United States. She said as the healthcare system is changing rapidly that she is planning to go back to school next year for her Master, that she want to be well prepared to meet the challenges. She had impressions that are consistent with what I researched about health reform. She stated that as American health care system is moving toward having health care that is more focus on prevention of disease, and greater number of people being insured, there will be more need for NPs who will provide basic care services.
