The Los Angeles County is one of the largest counties in the US that deals with a very diverse community and population. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health protects health, prevents disease, and promotes the health and well-being for all persons in Los Angeles County. Our focus is on the population as a whole, and we conduct our activities through a network of public health professionals throughout the community. Public health nurses make home visits to families with communicable diseases. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the United States government’s principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves. HHS provides one of the largest health services to the population for those who cannot afford to provide for themselves. Two of the largest health insurer are the Medicare and Medicaid. Health and Human Services Medicare program is the nation’s largest health insurer, handling more than 1 billion claims per year. Medicare and Medicaid together provide health care insurance for one in four Americans (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, June 2014).
Public health was defined as what we, as a society, do collectively to assure the conditions in which people can be healthy.
