I recently read the book Number The Stars by Lois Lowry. A summary of the book is two bestfriends that are trying to stay together. Ellen is jewish and Annemarie isn't. Annemarie and her family are trying to keep them together so the nazi officers don’t separate them. Keep reading to find out more...
The significant passage is, “Ellen had said that her mother was afraid of the ocean, that it was too cold and too big. The sky was, too, thought Annemarie. The whole world was: too cold, too big. And too cruel. ” I said this quote because the world was really cruel back then when they had the holocaust. In the holocaust they took all of the jewish people and put them into a concentration camp. When they put them into a concentration camp they

Annemarie does, “Annemarie continues telling herself the story of Little Red Riding-Hood. When she tells her sister the story, Annemarie sometimes changes her description of the path” ( Lowry, 121).
One of the settings from the novel was in Annemarie's house since Ellen was hiding from the nazi officers. Since Ellen is Jewish, Annemarie's parents let Ellen live there for a while so she didn’t get caught by a nazi officer. They said, “Annemarie and Ellen prepare to go to bed in Annemarie's room”(Lowry, 49).
A conflict in the book that is universal was Annemarie walking in the woods when she was going through a rough time in her life. I can relate to that because when someone very important in my life past away my sister and I wanted to get our minds off of everything so we went for a walk so we didn’t have to think about all of the bad things going on in are life. They said, “Annemarie continues telling herself the story of Little Red Riding-Hood. When she tells her sister the story, Annemarie sometimes changes her description of the path” (

In this novel courage, not only in a power to survive, but in a power to provide for family, is the most prevalent issue brought about in Hedas retelling of her time in the concentration camps and her time as wife to a communist official. One of the most endearing facts about Heda in her retelling of her experiences is that fact how despite everything that she had observed, participated in, and been subjected to she still remained “human” in that she was not misguided by hate and anger but…
