One of the settings from the novel was in Annemarie's house since Ellen was hiding from the nazi officers. Since Ellen is Jewish, Annemarie's parents let Ellen live there for a while so she didn’t get caught by a nazi officer. A conflict in the book that is universal was Annemarie walking in the woods when she was going through a rough time in her life.
