Effects of Lies and Truths on Annemarie in Number the Stars
Sometimes adults lie to children. Maybe it’s for their safety. Maybe it’s because they’re afraid. In the book, Annemarie was lied to a lot for different reasons. She was lied to too protect her and to protect others.
One time, Annemarie was lied to about her Great-aunt Birte dying. Annemarie’s mom and uncle told her they would have a funeral for her but when she and her uncle went to milk the cow, he told her that Great-aunt Birte was not real. He said, “It is much easier to be brave if you don’t know everything”(page 76). This was to protect her so if the Nazis came she would not know the information and wouldn’t have to lie to them. He said her mom doesn’t know everything and he doesn’t know everything. They only know what they absolutely have to know because too much information is

Her sister, Lisa, and Peter were part of the resistance. They were in a meeting when the Nazis came in and every body ran. As Lisa was running away, the Nazis ran her down in their car. When Annemarie’s parents found out, they told Annemarie that her sister died in a car accident. That was part of the truth, not the whole truth. This did not sound very heroic or anything but when Annemarie’s parents told her the complete truth at the end, it made Annemarie feel like her sister was a superstar. Her sister died trying to help fight a seemingly unstoppable power that made Lisa look like a hero. Her parents did the right thing by not telling Annemarie the whole truth because she was too young. In finding out the truth, it made Annemarie feel sad but happy of what her sister did.
In the book, Annemarie was lied to, maybe to protect her or to protect every body. In conclusion, sometimes children do need to be lied to because if you tell them everything than they could say something they are not supposed to and get themselves or others

The Difficulties Endured by Anne Frank & Eva Galler “Only the bad laws applied to us, that we couldn't walk on a sidewalk, only in the middle of the street. And we wear a star that everybody should recognize us. But it wasn't a law that somebody couldn't kill us. That law didn't apply to us,”(Menszer, “The Holocaust Survivors”). In his article, David LaBounty claims that those who write children’s literature take on roles so that they can teach children how to lie and when to use lies in their lives. LaBounty uses several different examples of authors and their stories to show how they teach children about lying. Aesop’s fables, such as “The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf,” are the first stories that LaBounty uses to support his claim. Aesop’s fables are used to discuss how being honest is always better than lying and that lying can have negative effects on characters. After introducing Aesop’s fables LaBounty discusses how parents want their children to be honest, but that not all lies are bad.…

The former President of India, Abdul Kalam, once said, "The bird is powered by its own life and by its motivation." Unfortunately, in Number the Stars, the author does not give the reader a clear reason why Annemarie and her family feel obligated to help the Rosens, making the story unrealistic. Annemarie does undergo change, but it is a minor change. At the beginning of the book, she is frightened when some German soldiers stop her, even though she didn't do anything illegal (yet). But, in the end, even though she is still frightened, she has enough courage to lie in front of their faces.…

“The trouble with lying and deceiving is that their efficiency depends entirely upon a clear notion of the truth that the liar and deceiver wishes to hide” -Hannah Arendt. This quotation expresses the way lying is a coverup for a bigger problem that someone wishes to hide. Lying is done on purpose in order to deceive someone just like in the novel The Girl on the Train. In this novel, characters such as the protagonist, Rachel, an alcoholic and Tom, Rachel’s ex husband both play a role in deceiving others. In The Girl on the Train Hawkins examines the way which lying dismantles people’s communication, creates distance, establishes obstacles, clouds the truth, and breaks up communication through the relationships of Anna and Tom, Rachel and…
