Organisation As a not-for-profit organisation Nuffield Health combines hospitals, health clinics, gyms and diagnostic units in addition to providing a multitude of treatments in order to create a complete health and wellbeing service (Nuffieldhealth.com1, 2015) by reinvesting operating surpluses back into the institution. Established in January 1957 by the British United Provident Association (BUPA), the organisation started by acquiring nursing home and continued to expand by purchasing and renovating a second home into a hospital which helped to build a firm foundation for the company today. For the first thirty years Nuffield gym solely depending on donations to cover operating costs however during the 1990s due to the rise in cost of modern medicine they began to use fees to cover costs (Nuffieldhealth.com3, 2015). The overall service continues to help ease pressure on the NHS by providing services under the NHS Choice agenda, as well as offering services that self-pay patients may not be able to access in the NHS (Nhs.uk, 2015).

However they are operating in a market where there has been a new breed of entrants due to some customers being put off by the high prices of the gyms. These budget gyms have become more appealing due to the lower prices offered as they have reduced operation costs by reducing the size and equipment provided at these
