Product Need Nuclear waste and radioactive waste in general are ongoing issues. When the nuclear power and radioactive materials that we use today were created and initially used many years ago, scientists were not concerned with the disposal methods as much as they are today because of the fact that they would not have worry about that any time soon after the production(Nuclear Waste, 2015). Today we are faced with the issue that previous researchers have left to wander and that is properly disposing of the radioactive waste and having the space and facilities to do so. Radioactive waste has been continuously generated

There were about 9 different chemicals that were mixed with diesel fuel for the treatment of wood. These chemicals included pentachlorophenol (PCP), Chlorinated dioxins and dibenzofurans, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and heavy metals. Instead of disposing the waste the correct way, the company reportedly dumped the waste into a well. That well led to underground water underneath the facility. The underground water led to a stream which empties into the Delaware River. There are about 26,000 people that lived within a 1 mile radius from the Superfund site.…

However, the biggest challenge in the nuclear usage is the storage and disposal of nuclear waste (Lipschutz & Dustin p483). Under the current situation, most western countries have reclamation programs to reprocess nuclear waste. Thus, are yet to establish centralized nuclear waste disposal and storage areas or zones. In most instances, countries that do not reprocess nuclear waste are stored in casks or dry storage at the nuclear facilities where the waste is produced. America does not reprocess their nuclear waste.…

Proponents for the Yucca Mountain project state that without the construction of a repository, there would be no place to store the hazardous waste that is constantly being produced. Fearing that the Three Mile Island nuclear waste accident would happen again, proponents for the repository site are constantly asking for a quicker solution to waste management. On the other hand, advocates against the Yucca Mountain project have referred to the proposition as the “‘Screw Nevada Bill’ because opponents argue that Yucca Mountain was chosen for political reasons” (Endres, 2009). Nevadans and politicians representing the state have constantly fought for the Yucca Mountain project to be terminated because of various issues surrounding state rights. Arguments have included the fact that the Department of Energy has disregarded citizen concerns and have not done enough research to prove that the project is safe and can withstand breaking down.…

Brennamam (2012) stated that the Bureau of Labor (BOL) did not effectively manage the cleanup of numerous radioactive mines, resulting in environmental contamination on Native American lands. The BOL has a pattern of ignoring health risks of the uranium mines and refuseto provide support, such as health care and payment options to affected Native American families (Brennamam 2012). For example the Jack Pile, was the largest open pit uranium mine in the United States and was located 2000 feet from the Native American village Paguate (Furlow, 2014). Residents of this village were exposed to high levels of radiation and toxic chemicals from the remaining radioactive waste piles (Furlow, 2014). Shockingly, Furlow (2014) states that Native American children played in the waste piles, Paguate residents drank contaminated water, and livestock grazed on toxic waste.…

Inspired by a forsaken orange that sat in a North Carolina parking lot, Jonathan Bloom wrote American Wasteland to examine the growing problem of food-waste in America. I think Bloom did a tremendous job by presenting this looming issue. His numerous anecdotes pertaining to food-waste creates an innate sense of relatability, which in turn direct readers’ attention to the statistical and logical presentations of the issue. This is an impressive feat because Bloom avoided coming off as preachy or judgmental in a book that attempts to raise awareness of something that general Americans have already decided it’s not important (xvi). As a result, Bloom’s systematic way of examining every aspect of America's habit of wasting food comes off as interesting…

Background In the article “The Truth About the Environment”, Bjorn Lomborg challenges the global concern of atmospheric and oceanic pollution by suggesting it is “exaggerated” or simply “transient” due to early industrial revolution. He continues to claim that an increase in economic prosperity and becoming “rich” (defined in this analysis as high GDP per capita in a global context) will reduce pollution as wealthier nations become more concerned with pollution.…

Between 1942 and 1953 there was active dumping of chemicals waste into the canal. Document submitted by Hooker to New York interagency task force of hazardous waste, showed that an estimate of about 21,800 tons of chemicals waste from the manufacturing process of the company was dumped in the canal. “These waste were mainly organic pesticide residues, waste solvents, fly ash and process sludge” (Philip, et al. p 313-314). About 6,900 tons of lindane (hexachlorocyclohexanes), 2000 tons of chlorobenzene, 200 tons of dioxin-contaminated trichlorophenol, 2400 tons of organic sulfur compounds (e.g., lauryl mercaptans), 2400 tons benzylchlorides and 2000 tons sodium sulfide/sulfhydrates” among others were been buried in the love canal over a ten year period.…

The biggest concern for nuclear power is the disposal of nuclear waste, there are multiple types of nuclear waste, these include very low level waste, low level waste, intermediate-level waste, and high level waste. These four classifications for nuclear waste are classified by the amount of radioactive material is in the waste, VLLW contains a level that is harmless while HLW contains levels that could be lethal, the kind of waste that is HLW includes used fuel cells and separate waste from reprocessing the used fuel. (World Nuclear Foundation). Disposal of the nuclear waste is paid for by…
