It seemed that the project was progressing steadily along the U.S. involvement to the World War II. By mid-1942, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has constructed various research and experimental facilities, and its Manhattan District was assigned to operate because many of the research were taken place at Columbia University in Manhattan (“Manhattan Project”). The rapid development of the project appeared to be the key to dominate the war. And it seemed to capture the attention from other nations who were fighting against the fascists. Great Britain and Canada supported the project, and let their scientists move to the U.S. to join it (“Manhattan …show more content…
As it is seen in the success that DuPont has now, the project was a great opportunity to those companies to expand their business as industry giants, and those engineers and scientists involved were allowed to explore their possibilities without stressing their financial and social status. The competition between the nations and the contests of experiments and researches brought radical advancement of the technology. In December 1942, Italian Enrico Fermi succeeded to produce a controlled chain reaction in Chicago (“Manhattan Project”). While its study, a highly fissionable element, Plutonium were created. From the extraction of U-235 from U-238, Scientists found that Uranium 238 were able to capture neutrons and to transform into a new element, Plutonium (National Park Service). Plutonium is currently used mostly at the power plant. Its fission generates huge amounts of energy. It is more stable than other Uranium, and safer for the transportation. The success of the chain reaction and the production of Plutonium have contributed greatly to the next step, construction of Atomic
