Nuclear Holocaust: A Short Story

So, the A-Bomb went off. What will happen next? The first thing that would happen would be for our family to pack everything we need to have to survive a nuclear holocaust. Next, I would collect all of my weapons, ammunition, and books. After my family was ready to go, we would take all the gas from my mother's van and my dad's SUV and put it into containers to carry with us. We would then pack my truck up with everything and begin the journey to our farm. We would have enough food onboard to last for three days and, considering it is a three hour drive, we probably will not need it all but, better to be prepared than to not have food. The truck would be able to drive on the back roads that we would be required to take to get to the …show more content…
Once we arrive at the farm, the first think we would do would be to activate our solar panels to power the house. The well pump would then be turned on and the water reservoir filled to decrease the risk of running out of water if the power went out or a solar panel was down. After the house was set-up to run, we would go into town to the farm and lumber company and barter for salt. I realized we would need extra salt when Randy ran out of salt and the townspeople in Alas Babylon started becoming. The salt would be for eating and for the water purifier. We would then check the refrigerators to make sure they were all operational. With adequate refrigeration, we would then go to our neighbors, who own goats, and trade for milk. For food, we would hunt the multitude of squirrel, rabbit, deer and turkey that occupy our …show more content…
We would have to resort to sowing and harvesting the crops by hand. This is going to be very labor intensive, but necessary if we want to have a long term supply of food and diesel. There are three 200 gallon diesel tanks on our property which would fuel the tractor until the corn or soy bean crop could be turned into biodiesel to fuel the tractor and golf cart. Biodiesel fuel is easily created from a few hardware store chemicals that could be procured during our trip to the farm and lumber store for salt. There would be a need for daily patrols around the fence of our farm to check the condition of the fence to further increase our security. The house is on a hill which would allow us to see anyone or anything that might try to approach. Once we have settled and everything is running smoothly, the short-band, wide-band, and ham radio would be set-up to allow us to communicate and collaborate with nearby farmers and ranchers. The radio would also allow us to listen to civil defense broadcast like Randy

It can be hard to tell who is right and wrong during the aftermath of a supposed nuclear holocaust. The Chrysalids, which is a book written by John Wyndham in 1955, tells a story that is unique, because throughout, it can be unclear who the reader should be rooting for. Waknuk and Sealand seem to be the most civilized communities thriving after the Tribulations, but their views differ in many ways. Both communities could potentially be the cause of a second nuclear holocaust, but it is more likely that Waknuk would be the cause. Waknuk follows the Bible blindly, and they often misinterpret The Bible’s meanings, Waknuk forces anyone who they deem “un-pure” out of their society, and Sealand’s morals seem to be a lot less misguided.…
