Once we arrive at the farm, the first think we would do would be to activate our solar panels to power the house. The well pump would then be turned on and the water reservoir filled to decrease the risk of running out of water if the power went out or a solar panel was down. After the house was set-up to run, we would go into town to the farm and lumber company and barter for salt. I realized we would need extra salt when Randy ran out of salt and the townspeople in Alas Babylon started becoming. The salt would be for eating and for the water purifier. We would then check the refrigerators to make sure they were all operational. With adequate refrigeration, we would then go to our neighbors, who own goats, and trade for milk. We would have to resort to sowing and harvesting the crops by hand. This is going to be very labor intensive, but necessary if we want to have a long term supply of food and diesel. There are three 200 gallon diesel tanks on our property which would fuel the tractor until the corn or soy bean crop could be turned into biodiesel to fuel the tractor and golf cart. Biodiesel fuel is easily created from a few hardware store chemicals that could be procured during our trip to the farm and lumber store for salt. There would be a need for daily patrols around the fence of our farm to check the condition of the fence to further increase our security. The house is on a hill which would allow us to see anyone or anything that might try to approach. Once we have settled and everything is running smoothly, the short-band, wide-band, and ham radio would be set-up to allow us to communicate and collaborate with nearby farmers and ranchers.
