The weakest of all four fundamental forces, gravity, was discovered in 1655 by Sir Isaac Newton. One day, Newton was drinking tea and observed an apple falling from a tree. Newton deduced that the force that caused the apple to fall to the ground also is the same force that causes the moon to orbit the earth. This also added to the evidence of other scientists’ work that the earth was not the center of the solar system. The strong nuclear force was ruled out also because this force does not affect electrons. Gravity was also ruled out because gravity is too weak to be involved in this process. Since this force was not as strong as the strong nuclear force, but stronger than gravity, it was named the weak nuclear force.
