Even with proper containment, one other problem that comes to mind is the fact that used nuclear waste can be actually reused to arm nuclear warheads. Other countries that use nuclear power plants like Japan or China could easily make nuclear weapons of mass destruction with the waste that comes from a nuclear power plant. Although these sound like hard problems that could halt the progress of constructing nuclear power plants, there are already solutions in play that could resolve these issues. Even though nuclear waste is harmful to the environment, it is not like the waste is just being dumped out into a random spot in the forest. No, engineers of nuclear power plants have already thought ahead of that. Nuclear power plants have built in storage units for the sole purpose to store waste. It was stated that “Today, this used fuel is stored at the plant sites, either in steel-lined, concrete vaults filled with water… or in above ground steel or steel-reinforced concrete container with steel inner canisters” (Nuclear Energy Institute). Even if there is ample space to put the waste away in the plants, there actually is not much waste to contain. To put into …show more content…
The one problem with nuclear power plants is to be able to make the changes necessary to produce and utilize them. Making the power plants will cost a lot of money, but it will also take time to build the plants. Even with building the plants, it will also take a long time to be able to return the condition of the climate and environment back to a stable, non-threatening condition. It will take decades to construct newer plants, so it is not really worth the time for the Earth to have to wait for change. The plan to take action against a degrading atmosphere needs to be accomplished now, not later. To even to begin to help “worldwide emissions (need to be reduced) by 60 to 80 percent before 2050” (Claussen). Some people are not willing to take the time and the money to be able to make the change necessary for this world to continue on in a healthy state. These people believe that if a change is needed, it needs to be made now, rather than later. Since the nuclear option takes too much time, these people feel it is not the best option, and others should be considered to benefit the future. Although it will take time, I believe that building the nuclear power plants will benefit the future. Even though Claussen may think nuclear energy is not the best option because of time, she says that “Nuclear energy is one of
