Huba 1 There are many issues with energy in America. Over time certain energy sources can be harmful. Thus, we must be careful what types of energy we use in abundance. Some of the main energy sources we use are: fossil fuels, nuclear energy, oil, and solar power. One main source of energy, perhaps the most used, is fossil fuels. Fossil fuels come from natural resources, such as, coal, natural gas, and petroleum. The fuels are nonrenewable, meaning once they are used up they are gone forever. Now, the fact that they are nonrenewable is not their only fault. The other fault they have is the fact that they leak pollution into the air while they are being processed into energy. Nuclear energy is made by using fission, the process of splitting an atom to release energy. The use of nuclear energy has benefits. Such as, a lower CO2 output than most other energy sources. Also, it has relatively low generating costs, and can be mass produced to meet the needs of many cities. Sadly, nuclear energy also has many cons. One problem is that nuclear energy is not infinite. Nuclear energy uses uranium to process and make energy. The problem with this is the fact that uranium is a nonrenewable substance just like coal. Thus, when uranium runs out so will the nuclear energy production. Another problem is the fact that nuclear energy produces radiation as a byproduct. Now, this radiation is often contained and never allowed near human populations. But, then again accidents do happen. Radiation is a very harmful because if an unstable atom hits a person’s cell the wrong way, the cell could become mutated resulting in cancer, or the radiation could burn skin, or even cause necrosis of a cell. This is especially harmful when millions of unstable atoms are exposed to humans. Oil is the second most used source of energy next to nuclear power. Oil is not only used for power, it is also used for heating homes, and running cars. There are not as many pros of using oil as energy as there are cons. Oil causes significant amounts of air pollution. When oil is burned for energy, it releases nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, methane, and many other harmful gases and metals. Oil used for energy creates a byproduct of sludge and oil residues left over from production, that are toxic wastes that must be disposed of carefully. Another bad thing about oil is that it must be drilled out of the earth, causing massive harm to wildlife, and it also creates pollution. Also, massive oil spills can occur causing unnamable damages and harm to wildlife and humans. All in all, not much good can come from using oil, mainly only pollutants come from
