Nuclear Energy - Environment’s rejuvenation or a hazard!!
In the early 1930s and 1940s, research was at its pinnacle yet very ‘small’, small in size, not in size of work but in size of the subject- atoms, neutrons, protons and nuclei. The works of Rutherford, Bohr, Einstein, Chadwick, Curie, Frederic, Fermi, Hahn, Strassmann all eventually led to the discovery of Nuclear Power or Energy, which is believed to be the panacea of energy crises that currently exist. It is a boon to the modern society for it can produce humungous amounts of energy from an amount of material as little as that of a spoonful. Interesting, isn’t it? Nuclear reprocessing does not eliminate the need for a repository, but also reduces the volume, along with that it also reduces the long term radiation hazard and heat dissipation capacity needed. It is possible to use waste heat in cogeneration applications such as district heating. Nuclear stations are generally not built in densely populated areas. Waste heat is more commonly used in industrial applications. So here we have an natural advantage of nuclear energy. Along with as per the reports, it has been calculated that the emission of the greenhouse gases has been reduced due to the usage of the nuclear power. So thrifting on nuclear energy is all around giving benefits to our environment. The thrust area of spending on nuclear gases also results into the least impact on our atmospheres as it does not release any hazardous gases like carbon dioxide, methane etc. which has resulted in the depletion of ozone layer in the atmosphere.But the fight here we have is to produce nuclear energy we have to extract uranium which has been the clean process since ages. Besides, each day technology is seeing improvements to increase efficiency and prevent pollution.In practice, the spent fuel is not anytime unshielded. It is always kept underwater as water is an excellent shield for it, for a few years until the radiation decays to levels that can be shielded by concrete in large storage casks. The final disposal of this spent fuel is always a hot topic, and is often comes out as an argument against the use of nuclear reactors. The sun would consume it nicely if we could get that into space, but since our rockets are so unpredictable, we can’t afford to risk atmospheric dispersal on lift-off.
