Nuclear Energy Advantages And Disadvantages

Many have been debating whether Ontario has made the right decision or not. Ontario has decided to build 2 new nuclear units at Darlington along with 10 refurbishments at Darlington, Bruce, and Pickering. $33-billion will be spent on nuclear energy and $27-billion for renewable energy along with $12-billion on conservation.

Ontario has proudly stopped using coal for electricity in 2014 and currently has 2 nuclear, 65 hydro, and 3 thermal fleets. These

three types of energy have been used for many decades by Ontario. There are many advantages and disadvantages of all three.

Producing hydro-electricity is actually more harmful than many think. It is true that hydro

plants do not emit as much air pollution as nuclear and thermal

Some fish die off from being restricted to go where they are safe, can sleep, lay their eggs, or find food. Problems like this are being solved as soon as they can be. For example, fish ladders have been put where hydro-electricity plants are so that the dam does not restrain fish in that area. Hydropower plants also need large open sources of water and with sixty-five dams already in Ontario, it is difficult to find a place to build new ones.

Thermal-electricity, one of the most traditional ways to produce electricity, is one of the most harmful ways due to the fact that burning fossil fuels for energy releases great amounts of greenhouse gasses into the Earth’s atmosphere. Thankfully it is only used when needed and often left unused and replaced by nuclear and hydro-electricity. A harmful source like this one is used because it can produce a good amount of electricity and after being used for so many years, we know how to control it and repair it very

Scientists are starting to find more alternatives such as bioenergy.

Returning to the question of whether Ontario has made the right decision or not. The arguments are that we do not need more nuclear plants to be built, as we are becoming more energy efficient each and every year while on the other hand, we may need to produce more electricity for the increasing amount of technology added into our lives.

We asked Verena MacDaniel, who lives nearby to a nuclear plant of what she thought about the government’s plan.

“I think that we should refurbish the nuclear plants as they may cause unneeded harm to those living nearby. Not only that, but we will need the extra electricity from nuclear energy until we can find a better source”.

Other opinions state that fossil fuels should be used as less as possible as we do not have much of it left, so instead of using our thermal fleets when we need additional electricity, we should use nuclear since hydro can not be controlled as well as thermal and nuclear

Nuclear energy is the energy released during nuclear fission or fusion. Nuclear fission is a nuclear reaction in which a heavy nucleus splits spontaneously or on impact with another particle, with the release of energy. Nuclear fusion on the contrary is the exact opposite; it gathers energy from the heavy nucleus combining with the shot particle. These two combined produce a lot of energy that is used all over the world on a daily basis. Nuclear power has proved to serve a huge part of our society today.…

However, uranium oxide has been to start move up and carbon an emission has been getting high in the air, nuclear power might be the solution to reduce this amount of pollutions. According to studies that mad, Australia has around 25% of the world’s resources of economic uranium.…

With its cheap cost to produce and provide electricity and it’s flawless safety record, the benefits of nuclear power definitely outweigh its risks. Secondly looking at the effects of nuclear power on the environment, nuclear power is cleaner than many forms of energy. According to ehow.com, the two main byproducts of generating nuclear power are water and radioactive waste used as fuel for the reactors. while this may sound bad, waste storage is not a huge issue. Much of the nuclear waste is able to be recycled into more fuel products, reducing the amount of waste actually needing…

With growing widespread use of nuclear power, around the world and the historic nuclear disaster, of Chernobyl, still in peoples minds it begs the question of whether or not the pros outweigh the cons. Nuclear power provides 20% of the power inside the United States according to the Nuclear Energy Institute and with 104 nuclear power plants inside the US alone the security of these power plants can not be overlooked. Since 911 the security of nuclear power plants took a drastic reform as it showed the real threat of terrorism. With the fear of another 911 regulations were put in place to ensure the security of nuclear power plants around the world after a nuclear power security summit took place.…

Science has identified this issue when they monitored how much resources we use and we have to understand how we won’t run out of resources. This issue affects us because one day we will run out of resources such as coal gas or oil and it will lead to a difficult like which will affect human population. Uranium has several uses and one of them is to power a nuclear power plant.…

Nuclear power is a better benefit to atmosphere and the world itself than coal. Nuclear power releases less greenhouse gases than coal making it environmentally friendly. For this reason we are better off choosing nuclear power rather than coal. Coal power plants are one of the biggest contributors to global warming. On the other hand nuclear power plants release little to no harmful gasses into the atmosphere.…

For starters, all nuclear energy plants follow the Clean Air Act. This type of energy is additionally recognized for creating energy while reducing greenhouse-gasses. Furthermore, this type of energy is considered one of the cleanest energy sources as it emits no air pollution, isolates its waste from the environment, and requires a relatively small plot of land. While Nuclear power plant accidents are few and far between, we cannot forget how a small and clean energy source can destroy environments and even expose workers to high levels of radiation.…

We as the human race are smarter now and understand how things work more than we used to, and we have the technological advances show for it. I believe that nuclear power plants will advance so far, that we will find a use for the used uranium. If we make more nuclear plants it will open up many job opportunities, it isn't a one man show for a nuclear plant to run, it takes hundreds of workers for a plant to run. The scientists in the control room, security, and people searching for more uranium, and of course the workers making sure there aren't any leaks in the plant(“Issues and controversies”).…

Regardless of the various definitions of renewable energy, nuclear energy meets every reasonable criterion for sustainability, which is the primary concern of countries. The United States should use nuclear energy for three primary reasons: first, it produces more cost effective energy than any other non-renewable resource. Second there is no release of greenhouse gasses which contribute to global warming, and finally nuclear energy is the most reliable source of power in the world today. Nuclear power produces electricity that is less expensive than coal and natural gas while providing more energy for use. The Energy Informative Organization supports this claim when the author states, “Generating electricity in nuclear reactors is cheaper…

Nuclear power comprises 20% of the world’s energy production. No other form of energy production runs the risk of being taken over by terrorists, or exploding and killing millions of people within a 50 mile radius (Nuclear Power Plants). The United States has 121 government sanctioned nuclear energy power plants in its borders that each cost extreme amounts to build and run. With the U.S. being nearly twenty trillion dollars in debt, it would be wise to stop all further development of nuclear energy.…
