decisions. The various preferences should be weighted against each other and a percent importance should be applied to that characteristic as its weighting factor. All weighting factors should sum to 100%. A baseline technology should be selected with which to compare all the other technologies or solutions. A variance factor between the baseline and the alternative is assigned and put in the appropriate cell. Commonly -9, -3, -1, 0, 1, 3, 9 are the assigned variance levels. The assigned variance levels can be biased and should be scrutinized. The variances and weight factors are multiplied and added together to obtain a total comparison against the baseline technology or solution.

The concept of a total number is also questionable as to the comparison of the difference in the total numbers with respect to the relevance for the decision. If a large number of characteristics are selected and the range of possible outcomes can be – 9000 to +9000 how relevant is the comparison if the totals range from -78 to +15?
This basic approach does have issues pertaining to decision making, but it does provide understanding of what characteristics are important in favor of and against the technology. Part B Q1. The normal dose of paracetamol is very safe to use and it is not over 4g per 24 hours; however, when the patient take more than 6g per 24 hours of paracetamol, the liver necrosis will happen within 10 to 12 hours and liver damage may occur within 24 to 48 hours. For the metabolism, most of the paracetamol is converted to nontoxic metabolites by the phase II conjugation of glucuronide and sulfate and a small amount of paracetamol is oxidized by the Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes in the phase I metabolism. In this phase, CYP1A2 and CYP2E1 enzymes convert paracetamol to N-acetyl-p-benzoquinoneimine (NAPBQI) which is highly toxic substances.…

The problem is to ensure that elderly medical patients take their medication and recommended dose at the proper time to ensure that they receive the necessary treatment, and prevent the condition from worsening in the process. To solve this problem, a device will need to be implemented that allows the user to be reminded when to take the medicine, and also be sure that the patient is taking the correct amount of medication. Our first idea was to develop a portable watch device with built in audio and visual cues to remind the patient of their need to take the medication. The device could be programmed ahead of time by a technician, and instruct the user to take the recommended dosage at the correct time.…

There are several possible types of terrorist attacks using Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), using conventional firearms and explosives, or ”other means of attack (including low-tech devices and delivery, attacks on infrastructure, and cyber terrorism)”, (FEMA, 2002, P. 9). Each type of attack or a combination of several will need its own action plan by emergency managers and emergency responders, making the identification of the type of attack and weapon used critical. If an attack occurs, one tool available to a jurisdiction is the Threat and Hazard Identification Risk Assessment (THIRA), which summarizes the “threats and hazards of concern showing how they may affect the community” (DHS, 2013, P.1). The THIRA will outline the possible risks that would be facing emergency responders after a specific disaster and what they might face (FEMA, 2002). For example, the guide describes the threat of radiation after a nuclear/radiological attack, or the threat of contamination after a chemical or biological attack.…

In the following critical essay, we will utilize a ten-point checklist to evaluate an article entitled Measure the Immeasurable: The World of Smell and Taste (“MIM”). This ten-point checklist has been applied against Six Sigma project case studies. MIM is not a case study by definition, but more of a look at industries’ use of new electronic measurement techniques and the influence they can have on and the opportunities they present to companies and teams using the DMAIC. More specifically, MIM explores the food and drink industries’ primary soft critical-to process elements, smell and taste, and the benefits and prospects of using E-nose and E-tongue technology to measure these CTQs.…

A statistical relation exists between two economic variables if the average of one variable is related to another variable, but it is impossible to predict with certainty the value of one based on the value of another. (Mark, H) For example: The total cost is $10 per unit on average; and if the number of units increases by 1, then the total cost would also increase by $10. Sometimes the result of actual total cost may either increase or decrease, which could be more than $10 or less than $10. In this type of situations, a statistical relation exists between the average total cost and the result.…
