2. Objective/EQ: During math today, we are going to play a game that includes adding two three-digit numbers using the place value strategy (includes base ten blocks), the empty number line strategy, or the break apart strategy. But, before we play our game we are going use a flipchart to review adding three-digit numbers within a word problem. What strategies will you use to add the three-digit numbers in the word problems? …show more content…
Read the second word problem aloud for everyone to hear. “ Jessica had 271 flowers. Yesterday, Jessica picked 108 more flowers walking home from school. How many flowers does Jessica have altogether?” Have the students work through the equation problem amongst themselves, helping one another recall the steps taken from the last problem (encourage the use of the place value strategy). The teacher can observe and ask questions to probe students thinking if they are stuck (After you do this, what do you think you need to do next in order to find the sum?). After 2-4 minutes, ask for thumbs up when everyone has determined the sum. Call on one student to come to the board and walk through the problem with the group. The teacher should ask probing questions as the student works though the problems so that his/her classmates can “see” their thinking. If the student skips a step, ask the rest of the class if he/she missed anything. Allow for the class to correct their peers. When the sum is given ask for students to touch their head if they agree. If someone does not agree, have them share the sum they determined and the strategy they used. Repeat for slide
