In today’s world of medicine when developing a patient care plan nurses should use evidence-based practice that has been peer-reviewed by subject matter experts (Miller, Jones, Graves, & Sievert 2010). The internet is frequently used by nurses to gather more information, expand their knowledge base, and provide patient education. The website was found using the Google search engine, and chosen because of my work with the pediatric population. The resources provided on KidsHealth are clearly labeled and easily navigated through; links to additional information, as well as the name and credentials of professionals who reviewed the articles are clearly stated.
As a nursing professional it is important to be able to search for health information on the internet, determine whether the information is accurate and credible, and provide education to patients. For example, a nurse working in a pediatric office could use information from the Growth & Development section of KidsHealth to provide education to new parents regarding at what age developmental milestones should occur. could also be utilized by an inpatient nurse working a general pediatric floor; if a child is admitted with bronchiolitis, the nurse could provide information to the parents regarding the diagnosis and suggested treatment options. As a community or school nurse, KidsHealth could be utilize to provide information to school-aged children and teenagers to provide education regarding nutrition, exercise, weight loss, and growth and development.
