Nova's Blood: A Narrative Fiction

Improved Essays
It’s been years since scientists created genetically modified animals that mutated and escaped, and now roam the planet free. Nova waits for her father to tuck her into bed. She can’t fall asleep until he has done his nightly routine of checking for monsters throughout her bedroom. For most children, monsters under the bed are nothing but a product of a wild imagination. However, for Nova, they are a reality.

“Daddy! Hurry!” cries Nova.

Callum rushes into his daughter’s bedroom, afraid that something is wrong from the tone of Nova’s voice.

“What is it?! Is something wrong?” Callum shouts into the darkness.

“You haven’t checked my room for monsters yet,” she replies.

“Jeez, Nova. You almost gave me a panic attack. I was just finishing up some paperwork from today’s job. Could it not wait?”

“Monsters wait for no one daddy! What if they eat me?”

“Fine, fine. I’ll check for monsters now. It has to be a quick one tonight though.”

“Don’t forget under the bed,” Nova reminds her father.

“Yes, honey, I’m getting there.”

“And behind the curtains too!”

“You know, Nova, I’ve got the whole house secured with the latest technology. No monsters could get in here even if they tried.”

“You don’t know that, Daddy.”

Nova looks up at her dad, wide-eyed, with a puzzled look on her face. “Why aren’t you afraid of the monsters, Dad?”

Callum walks over to his daughter’s bed and sits down beside her. He has wondered for years when the right time would be to tell her of his real job. Every day, he hunts monsters and beasts that lurk in the darkest corners of the city. It was the job that was assigned to him at birth. And, following in his footsteps, it will one day be Nova’s. Callum decides to keep the truth hidden for just a little bit longer.
