A self-made person, who believed 100 % and more in the power of education, to him education, is the answer to the world’s entire problem. By profession, he is a military scientist, but to everybody that knows him, he is also a chemist, a physicist, a biologist, a linguistic, a history guru and absolute geography maniac and that is all because of his relentless reading habits. A language teacher in elementary school helped to diversify my reading and introduced the power of critical thinking. She would have us read a chapter from a literature and discuss it in detail for weeks before forming any kind of judgment. Every now and then, she will have us read the same book twice and to our surprise we grasp a new lesson with a completely fresh perspective. Through the medium of that experience, I discovered critical thinking is self-directed and that immensely sway how I write. As seen in the three articles, each author had their own purpose in why literacy can be a good advantage and figured out different strategies to help ameliorate themselves. During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

First Reading: “Don’t You Think It’s Time to Start Thinking?” By Northrop Frye Frye (year?) is talking about critical thinking as a means in which to discern the difference between reading and writing for basic knowledge, and the more effective use of articulated methods of reading and writing as way of expressing more complex thought processes: “Most students need to be taught, very carefully and patiently, that there is no such thing as an inarticulate idea waiting to have the right words wrapped around it” (Frye para.4). This form of “articulation” presents the need for reading and writing as a foundation for critical thinking and an objective way to communicate with others. Therefore, reading and writing are tools for critical thinking about the society in which people communicate with each other on a daily basis.…

I was surprised to read how the term literacy has changed over time and all of the meaning that it now holds. “Literacy has morphed to characterize someone’s level of knowledge or competence in a particular area or subject,” according to Vacca (2014, p. 12). Reading and writing were the first concepts that would come to my mind when thinking of the word literacy, therefore, I was shocked to read how “complex and multidimensional the concept of literacy”(Vacca, 2014, p. 12) has become. Computer literacy, digital literacy, information literacy, media literacy, and health literacy are just a few examples of this concept. As society’s ability to communicate has evolved, so has the concept of literacy.…

Since taking this class I have added more ways for me to think more critically. A few things that have made my critical thinking easier is how to mark a book, reading and reflection, application of wasteland, and the 2 types of information given descriptive and prescriptive. I know that marking a book is good for critical reading but when we read the article How to Mark a Book I found I was completely wrong.…

Literacy adds so much to a persons life and changes the perspective of others around them. In being literate I was seen as smarter and more educated like how people in American viewed Adichie after learning she was familiar with our customs. In being literate I had so many more opportunities in life because like Alexie I had beaten a stigmatism that had previously held me back in life. I was now seen as the smart child with a disability as Alexie was seen as the smart Native American. This made people believe I was more capable in life and could actually go somewhere.…
