Elmira, N.Y.(WENY)-- One local high school choir is gearing up to sing at a historic venue in New York City. The Notre Dame Choir will perform in a concert at Carnegie Hall in March. While that's a few months away, they're holding a fundraising concert Monday night with some special guests.

"They were able to do this because of the fact that they have gotten gold ratings in different compeititions they have done, different festivals that they have gone to in 2015 and 2016," says Susan Tanner, a Library Media Specialst at Notre Dame High School, who works with the choir. This is the second year in a row the Notre Dame Choir, directed by Krista Easton, will be performing at Carnegie Hall. They will sing with the National Youth Choir during the concert. Students say it's an amazing feeling singing in such a historic venue.

On May 10th, I had the opportunity to the “The Stony Brook Roots Ensemble. This was my first experience witnessing traditional American music played live. The venue and the ambiance were completely different from my time at the orchestra at the Staller Center. The performance took place in the Wang Center Chapel, which had surprisingly great acoustics than expected. At the orchestra there was very strict etiquette when in attendance, where one must be incredibly quiet in order to not disturb anyone else.…

On November 12, 2015 I attended the Veterans Day Jazz free form concert held at CBC’s choir room. This was the first time I ever went through the music/art building and it was pretty cool. The choir room looked, well like a choir room; inspirational posters on the wall, instruments, sound system, etc. When I first walked into the room I was bit overwhelmed with the amount of people in the small to medium sized room. There was a total of three high schools performing and of course CBC.…

On the evening of March fourteenth, the talented singers of Carl Sandburg High School put on an excellent performance for friends and family to enjoy. Although it was rather short concert, I still had the pleasure of hearing eight diverse groups sing at this year’s Winter Choir Concert. At 7 o’clock on the dot, the women of Treble Choir came out on stage. As the chatter in the audience hushed, the president of the group announced who they were and briefly talked about the two pieces they were singing that night. Treble Choir then proceeded with singing Ragtime Town, the first song I heard that night.…

I’m sitting alone in the front pew of the University of Virginia Chapel on a cold December night. In front of me there is a tall metal stand with a set of bongos perched precariously atop. Behind me sits the entire crowd of the sold out Virginia Women’s Chorus Candlelight Concert. When I arrived in Charlottesville months earlier, I could have never expected to be here. I have just finished performing a piece with the chorus minutes earlier, when a member of the chorus steps forward and addresses the audience to explain and introduce the next piece.…

New York Philharmonic is one of my favorite places to listen to the western classical music. I always have a great positive sense after a concert. To be honest with you, the idea of attending live events is really good and useful for every student. The goal of our educational system is to make people study not only their major material, but also be well rounded and can have a conversation on different topics in other fields of studies. Live musical assignment helps the students improve their knowledge by first learning the theory in the classroom and let use critical thinking ability later during the live musical…
