Gone Without a Trace Riding peacefully one second, gone the next. On the early morning of March 9th, 1977, Notorious B.I.G., also known as Biggie, was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting. Although his death remains as an unsolved mystery in the police records, Notorious B.I.G. was abruptly murdered by LAPD detective David Mack. Notorious was in Los Angeles, California to perform his new album called Life After Death and present a music award to the artist Soul Train. After the ceremony he made an appearance at a party hosted by different magazines and record labels. Men from both the Bloods and Crips gangs were there as well. It is said that fans of Tupac may have been upset with the things said about Tupac is Notorious’s songs. Showing that the two were no longer friends Gates claims, “and, like Tupac, his friend turned rival”(Gates 471). Tension was at its highest peak between Notorious and Tupac. Fighting nastily, they were disrespecting themselves offending others.They had once shared a bond and a love for music and now that are rivals and sing to diss each other. With this in mind, people believe that Tupac 's fans supposably felt the need to protect Tupac and stand beside him. People also decided to take a more dramatic turn and wanted to murder Notorious because of the sudden death of Tupac. With Notorious being an East Coast rapper and Tupac being a West Coast rapper there was a lot of tension between the two areas. Many gangs and members of each coast were very protective and prideful of their hometown. If someone were to even whisper about the other he would be found and harmed. It has been said, “cops said they believe he was targeted but refused to say whether the slaying was linked to Skakur’s murder”(Millner1). If one of them were to feel any sort of threat they could cause scenes and matters would become very serious. That is why when East Coast Rapper Notorious talks down on the West Coast a gang member may have become defensive which causes reporters to say, “it was a matter of pride” (Moss2).
