The setting of the book Nothing to Fear by Jackie French Koller takes place in Manhattan, New York during the Great Depression. This was caused by investors, who panicked quickly, and sold sixteen million shares of stocks. Which therefore caused Wall Street to panic, and then they lost millions of investors due these events leading to the stock market crash and the economy of America to plummet. Because of this, people were forced to found cheap ways of entertainment to keep themselves occupied. These include books, radio shows, miniature golf, concerts, magic shows, and baseball games which were surprisingly cheap at the time. Danny’s life just keeps getting harder because now his father is leaving to go find work to make money and he doesn’t know when he is going to be back.
3: “‘Happy days are here again!’ it blared. ‘Roosevelt won!’ Mama shouted as I staggered out to the kitchen, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. ‘It was a landslide!’” (138).
Roosevelt winning impacted Danny because everyone was happy because he was going to fix the economy and hopefully end the Great Depression giving hope to his hard times one day getting better.
4: “Doc studied my face again, then nodded. ‘Your mother’s lost a lot of blood,’ he said, ‘and she was very weak to begin with. She’s in a coma’” (256).
After life seemed to start becoming positive and better, Danny’s mother gives birth, loses a lot of blood and falls into a coma setting him back greatly emotionally having only Hank and Maureen and Patrick to take care of.
5: “Our husbands it seems, was a freight together back in December … Your husband slipped. He was killed instantly”
