As you read, it seems like every line is saying "Nothing Gold Can Stay"—just in a different way in each line, and that notion is quite radical. The title doesn't just say that most gold things don't last. It tells us that nothing and absolutely nothing, gold does. You might look at some gold jewelry and think to yourself, "I paid a lot of money for this jewelry, this will never fade" and you would probably be right. But this is not the kind of “gold” Robert Frost is talking about in the poem.…

Unfortunately, those were his last words, but he tells Pony something very important. When Johnny tells Ponyboy to stay gold he doesn’t mean it literally. He is talking about the poem Pony recited to him when they were hiding in the church called “Nothing Gold Can Stay”. He apparently, was able to interpret it and use it to help Ponyboy. In the poem, gold symbolized innocence, youth, and purity. Johnny is asking Ponyboy to stay “gold”, or innocent,…

The meaning of the poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost is that nothing is going to last forever. He shows this with the comparison of nature to life. The beginning and ending of a day as we see the colors of dawn begin and the colors fade into dusk and darkness. Likewise, the growth of children, from their birth and innocence until their death and sometimes cynicism that they have learned through life as we grow from the wonders of life and the beauty that surrounds us, to understand that life is valuable and precious to us. Yes, we all must age and die, but future generations will be born and live on and…
