Nothing Gold Can Stay Symbolism

In Frost’s poem Nothing Gold Can Stay, he describes how natures changes. He shows this through symbolism, imagery, and allusion. In his poem he supports a message that all beautiful things eventually fade. Frost has a tone in his poem that as time goes on it brings a certain type of grief. Frost’s poem uses nature symbolically that nothing good that happens will last. He describes how children are born with this type of innocence by saying “Nature’s first green is gold”, but in the second line he says “Her hardest hue to hold” meaning that keeping a child’s innocence is very hard to do as they begin to get older. When they get older they begin to be just like everyone else sinful and open to all the wrong things in life. Frost shows that by saying, “then leaf subsides to leaf”. Instead of turning into a beautiful flower as we grow up will will just turn into another leaf. Flower symbolizes beauty and innocence, whereas Leaf represents sin. Its deeper meaning is that children are born with this innocence and purity. “Her hardest hue to hold” “But only so an hour” this means that children begin to grow and start to lose their innocence. “So Eden sank to grief” describes the most beautiful place that God created even had to come to end. Lastly Frost says “nothing gold can stay” nature meaning is that spring eventually will go to fall and winter where everything dies and loses its beautiful.
