Nothing Daunted Summary

This book Nothing Daunted is nonfiction. The main characters are Dorothy Woodruff & Rosamond Underwood who was close friends from childhood and they both graduates from the smith college. As the months went by, their confidence grew as they toured a coal mine owned by their new friend Bob Perry. The man who led them out west was Ferry Carpenter, outrageous young lawyer and cattle. Dorothy and Rosamond spent nine months on a grand tour of Europe after college in 1910, then, bored from the society and chaperones balls and no current prospects of marriage, they went off to teach the children of homesteaders in a schoolhouse on the western slope of Colorado. Dorothy is supposedly engaged during their 1 year term teaching but not much is mentioned …show more content…
The author seemed to include every minute bit of her research into the book, and it would have been so much better with some hard editing. Individual paragraphs would have a random sentence inappropriately thrown in, interrupting the narrative. Very disorganized! That being said, the story itself was great. I liked the lack of conflict not wanting to give anything away, I won’t say more than that, but it was really, really refreshing to read a story about good people doing the best they could. The epilogue was really touching. I would have loved to know these two fantastic ladies. I really did like Dorothy and Ros, and I admired their adventurous spirit (like me) and their willingness, to roll with the flow when they faced situations so different from their sheltered, wealthy childhood. A story about two young girls heading west to teach for a year in the early 1900’s should be a fascinating and adventurous book. But unfortunately, the book is written in a boring manner that it managed to bore me even during a kidnapping. It took over 100 pages until we get the chance to read about the actual year spent on Colorado. They found love along the way, married afterwards and moved on. The actual story was

This book does a great job keeping the reader what will happen next. If you aren’t into to history this book wouldn’t be for you. It has lots of dates in the beginning and kind of drags a little before it will get good. However, if you stay with it and keep reading it gets much better. The book has strong points but it also hits it lower points and it doesn’t seem as interesting.…

The syntax was poor and filled with incredible amounts of figurative language that took away from the scientific and historical aspect of the book. It was over dramatic and didn’t go into detail of the science behind the epidemic rather highlighting the social aspect of it. Her writing is confusing and very elementary. However, it made me realize a large piece of our past as Americans and made me glad not to be born in the 1700s. This book had great potential but failed to properly land, despite this, I enjoyed the book even if it left me yearning for…

I also liked it because it made me think about how unfairly some people are treated for something they can not control. Like there skin color or there gender. It is sad to think that people are automatically judged for that. It has helped me realize that I need to be more open, understanding, and caring about people with different biological genes. I love passages that tell a story, but have a meaning that really makes you think.…

My complaint about this novel is that the language that is used makes it rather boring to read. It felt as if the book dragged on. Finally, I thought that the way the book was formatted was excellent. It really gave you a good idea of the different steps in the process, although I feel like that if it was a little shorter it would be better. I say this because even though the author explained herself in a great and detailed way, it was very long. Sometimes when I was reading, I got a little bored and wanted to move to the next event in the…

I enjoyed the setting of a civilization quite different to the one I lived in, because the author wrote descriptively to make a new world come to light before my eyes. The novel gave me a thought to think about in terms of life and self-determination to work hard, which I took note of because I will soon be entering adult life and have to work to create a career and life of my own. It gave me lessons to learn on dealing with what life throws at you. It seemed to take while for the novel to reach the rising action and climax, but once the novel reached that point, I really enjoyed reading it. When the tribe began to fight back against the missionaries for the sake of their traditions and heritage, the book became more interesting, as the time leading up to that point was filled with the miserable life of being exiled.…
