SEVEN NUMBERS
It was just an ordinary Friday morning of my eighth grade year with roughly two weeks of school left; my grandma picked me up and brought me to school. I saw my teacher, Mrs. Williams, writing numbers on the whiteboard- my classmates and I looked at each other confused. What are those numbers for? What is she doing? My thoughts after seeing the numbers on the board were that my teacher was writing numbers that we were going to use later that day. As I got my things ready for school, I came in and sat at my desk. Then I looked at the board again; seven numbers were listed. Immediately I knew it had something to do with my class because there were seven of us- but what those numbers meant I did not know because Mrs. Williams would not tell us.
The morning went on as we proceeded to go to chapel- I was trying really hard to concentrate during the service but those numbers were stuck in the back of my head. What could they mean? Are we in trouble? It amazed me of how much I could come up with just thinking about seven numbers. After chapel my class raced back to our classroom because we

I was shocked- never in a million years would I have thought I would be our class’ valedictorian; I mean my class had a lot of smart people in it. After that announcement, everyone congratulated me and went on with the day. Throughout the whole day I still could not believe it; I was the valedictorian of our class. I thought for sure something had went wrong and things got mixed up. When the day came to the end, my teacher called me up to her desk and said that everything was doubled checked and that I am the valedictorian. She then congratulated me and said that I should start thinking about my speech since school is coming to an end; I said “Alright” and went

Literacy Narrative What is Literacy?Google defines literacy as “the ability to read and write.” Literacy plays a major role in our everyday lives, writing our essays that are due within two days, writing a post on facebook, reading a text message, etc. Everyone experiences literacy in a different way, some experience a struggle, not being able to comprehend the purpose of literacy or avoiding it. and others thrive in it. My experience was somewhat neutral due to the fact that as a child I loathed reading and writing, but as I went on through my education I grew to love it.…

It became evident that while Athena was confident in reading, writing and ordering numbers up to and beyond the thousands, which aligns with the Year 4 ‘Number and Place Value’ content descriptor in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics (ACMNA072), her lack of understanding about place value within a base-ten system meant that she could not interpret numbers comfortably in order to solve problems to align with (ACMNA073) (ACARA, 2016). While she knows the procedures for adding and subtracting numbers that bridge decades and hundreds and can show correct working out on paper, her mental strategies regarding place value needed practice. It was determined that activities in which manipulatives could support the mental strategies needed could help, as suggested by Burns (2004). The intention was to segue into this first by revising her understanding of two digit numbers and developing sense of number…

Polly showed understanding, so the lesson was extended by introducing another tens frame to challenge her understanding (Department of Education, 2013). For example she was asked” how many counters would fit into these two frames”. Polly answered twenty correctly without counting each box. She confidently made numbers in the teens and removed the counters correctly when asked to show various lower numbers. Two tens frames were used (see appendix 1) to represent two different groups such as “ten and two make…

Shining Library Book Me and classmates were told that we had to do something nice for the school. It wasn’t just our grade, it was the whole middle school who had to something. There were tons of jobs to be done just inside the building. When it was nice out, some of the 8th graders would go out and do the things outside, while the rest of us stayed inside. My job was organizing the bookshelf in the library.…

I was in a deep sleep dreaming about my life until BOOM, my mom came in and told me to wake up. I was walking to the bathroom like a zombie to the bathroom brushing my teeth, taking a shower, and changing my clothes. We had to get to the airport as quickly as possible, because our flight leaves at five o’clock in the morning. Even though I was mad doing this I still enjoyed it because we were on our way to Florida!!This is great practice because one day I will have to do this again.…

A long time ago when I was in 8th grade I had gotten into the wrong car. Here's the story: I was in my last class of the day and was ready to go home. The last bell had rung and I was ready to go, in the halls there was so many students shoving each other trying to get through. I made it out of the crowd and opened the door to get out of school. Outside there's lines of cars where parents are waiting for their child to get out.…

Alyssa, the Tutor I was sitting in my sixth grade class, eager to see what we would be doing for the day. My teacher, Mrs. Sobus, was passing out papers from the tests we had last week. I had a feeling I did not do so well considering my scores from tests in the past. I anxiously sat in my seat and looked around the big, white classroom covered in shark images. As I looked around, I saw everyone talking to each other and being happy with their grades and there I sat with a devastated face.…

My First Time Babysitting It was a dark rainy Friday evening, school just let out for the weekend and I was free except I still had one thing to do left, as I was doing a weird walk jog across the campus while trying not to get soaked just to get to the main building, as my phone started to make this weird ringing noise and obviously I got a bunch of looks. When I looked at my phone I saw that my dad was calling me and when I answered my dad told me not to walk home in the rain and just wait it out. Once I got to the main high school building, I walked through the maze of hallways and lockers, and finally just finally I made it to the front of the building. It was still pouring down rain when I looked out of the window, by this time the storm was almost through…
